WordPress Blocks theme redesign

intro
SATNEWS is a high-traffic news platform serving the global satellite, space, and aerospace industries, where performance, SEO, and editorial efficiency are critical. The project involved a full website redesign aimed at modernizing the front end, improving content flexibility, and establishing a scalable foundation for future growth. I delivered this work as a contractor through Toptal, rebuilding the site on WordPress using the Genesis framework while transitioning to a modern, block-based architecture.
Technically, the redesign was implemented as a custom WordPress theme with a suite of bespoke Gutenberg blocks built using React. The front-end build leveraged Webpack for asset bundling and a modular JavaScript and SCSS architecture optimized for performance. PHP dependencies and environment consistency were managed via Composer, while block rendering was structured to produce clean, semantic HTML for SEO and accessibility. The theme was engineered with a performance-first mindset, featuring optimized asset loading, responsive layouts, and a CSS-variable–based dark mode implementation, resulting in a fast, SEO-ready, and maintainable production system.
The challenge
As a content-heavy news platform, SATNEWS presented several technical challenges:
- Migrating a legacy Genesis-based theme to a modern block-driven architecture
- Supporting high publishing velocity without compromising performance
- Improving SEO foundations for large volumes of evergreen and breaking-news content
- Ensuring fast load times across devices and network conditions
- Introducing dark mode without duplicating styles or increasing technical debt
- Maintaining compatibility with existing editorial workflows
The redesign needed to balance modernization with stability, ensuring minimal friction for editors while delivering meaningful gains in performance and maintainability.
the solution
The solution was a custom WordPress theme rebuild using the Genesis framework as a foundation, paired with a suite of custom Gutenberg blocks tailored specifically for SATNEWS’s content needs. These blocks replaced rigid templates with flexible, reusable components, allowing editors to assemble rich layouts while preserving consistency and SEO structure.
Key challenges included:
- Development of custom Gutenberg blocks optimized for editorial and SEO use cases
- A performance-first front-end architecture focused on minimal markup and efficient asset loading
- Clean semantic HTML and structured heading hierarchies to improve crawlability
- Dark mode implementation using CSS variables to avoid style duplication and ensure maintainability
- Careful optimization of scripts, styles, and fonts to achieve fast load times
- Responsive layouts designed to handle dense content across all breakpoints
The project required close collaboration between design, engineering, and content stakeholders to ensure the final product met both technical and organizational goals.
Results
The redesigned SATNEWS site delivers a noticeably faster, cleaner, and more modern experience while retaining the editorial power required for a high-volume news platform. Performance improvements are immediately visible, with optimized asset loading and streamlined front-end output contributing to excellent page speed and responsiveness.
The new block-based architecture gives editors more control over content presentation, improves long-term maintainability, and provides a strong SEO-ready foundation ahead of launch. With support for dark mode, responsive layouts, and scalable content structures, the platform is well-positioned for future growth and iteration.
